The enlargement of the EU is a divisive topic. To help raise awareness of the EU Strategy for the Western Balkans, the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations requested ESN to prepare and implement a series of communication activities. The aims were to inform the public and generate debate on enlargement policy and on the benefits and challenges of EU membership.

ESN organised a series of closed events, for press and networking, and oversaw communication activities in the Western Balkans (Bosnia, Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania and Kosovo), Belgium, Luxembourg and Poland.
In the Western Balkans, EU journalists were escorted on a three-day regional press trip to Skopje, Sarajevo and Belgrade. ESN arranged the programme, accommodation, catering, interpreters, plus the coordination of press materials and their translations. ESN provided translation of the resulting articles (from Danish, Croatian, Hungarian, Polish and Romanian into English) for the European Commission and delivered a media coverage report.
In Poland, ESN organised two major exhibitions on EU accession at the Forum of Cities and Regions, which included on-site stand management and transportation of materials from Brussels.
In Brussels, ESN handled the logistics for a round-table event (including invitations, registrations, venue booking, accommodation, catering, and follow-up) called ‘Boosting public support for the European perspective of the Western Balkans’ that had over 300 participants. ESN also organised an award ceremony, titled ‘EU Award for Roma Integration in the Western Balkans and Turkey’.
The project ended with two study trips. Firstly, journalists from the Western Balkans visited the EU institutions in Brussels. They had the opportunity to take part in a high-level conference and met key stakeholders such as the President of Kosovo, Albanian Parliament members and high representatives from the UNDP and UNICEF. Secondly, ESN invited the journalists to Luxembourg on a visit to the Eurostat premises.
In parallel to these events, ESN coordinated a major media campaign that included promoted posts on EU Enlargement Policy on social media.
'Cleaner air for all' infographics
In order to show the advantages of its proposed clean air measures, the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) tasked ESN to create interactive infographics for a broad audience.
52 biodiversity tips booklet
In the run-up to the annual EU Green Week, the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) contracted ESN to update a brochure with 52 tips on how to protect biodiversity in cities.

ESN was honoured to support the ‘(Re)New Europe’ summit in Romania by managing its social media, press relations and providing conference equipment.

ISICEM - Event online

Know your pollinators!
