As part of an initiative to promote sustainable food consumption, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety hosted the EU Citizens’ Food Systems Summit Dialogues on 12 July 2021. Over two days, selected groups of citizens participated in 6 online consultations on topics related to food systems. These consultations were preceded and concluded by plenary sessions.
ESN oversaw the organisation and delivery of the dialogues. This included the management and coordination of all logistics, hosting the event online, and finding the moderators, session leaders, note-takers and interpreters.
ESN used its network of contacts throughout EU Member States and a massive pan-European social media campaign to recruit potential candidates to contribute their thoughts on food systems. We compiled a list of between 10 and 15 people for each of the 6 discussion topics. The selection criteria were strict and based on equality in terms of age, gender and home country. The European Commission gave its final approval for the selection.
The topics discussed were:
- Green claims and sustainable food labelling
- The views of young people on sustainable and healthy diets
- Sustainable production
- Sustainable and healthy diet
- Prevention and reduction of food waste
- Antimicrobial resistance
Each group’s spokesperson presented the conclusions of their discussion to the concluding session. A total of 1 273 people registered to this event.
ESN’s moderators and session leaders completed the UN forms for reporting on the outcomes of the discussions, so the EU could use these for its input to the UN Food Systems Summit, held in September that year.
The spokespersons of each discussion group presented their conclusions to relevant organisations and European institutions in a high-level public event a few days later, on 16 July.
While the citizens’ dialogues were held in small groups, the high-level event was transmitted through a tailor-made platform in the style of a ‘TV-programme’. Thanks to ESN’s interpreters in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish, citizens from across the EU could exchange their views on the future of food systems openly and constructively, in a unique online summit.
